In July 2017 Northvolt took the next step towards establishing a large-scale battery factory in Europe. After an in-depth analysis of eight Swedish and two Finnish municipalities deemed candidates for the location of Northvolt's first factory a decision was made to move forward with either Västerås or Skellefteå. During the coming fall, public consultations for the establishment of a large-scale production of lithium-ion batteries will be undertaken in the two Swedish municipalities.

• Northvolt will build Europe’s largest battery factory.

• Batteries are key in the transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. Electrification and renewable energy storage are the keys to a carbon neutral society. Batteries will enable the transition.

• Northvolt’s first large-scale battery production facility will require a $4 billion investment over six years. The factory will have four blocks of 8 GWh capacity at a site the size of nine soccer fields which will employ 2.500 people.

• The Nordic countries were a natural choice for the location of a first factory: They offer access to clean water, inexpensive, carbon neutral energy with a stable electric grid along with a highly educated work force, academic competence and a large number of multinational corporations with the right profile.

• Northvolt assessed eight Swedish and two Finnish municipalities to identify the optimal site for its first production facility.
